Puff Stitch Doily

Hi all,

I have a new doily pattern that I’ve been meaning to share. I'm a big fan of making doilys with worsted weight yarn because I feel it's kind of rebellious and it also gives them more of a warm, cozy vibe. I made a few similar doilys to this one a long time ago and just recently decided to sit down and try to remember how I made them. It wasn't an easy process, let me tell you! I hope you enjoy!

Puff Stitch Doily

Materials

-Worsted weight yarn (less than 1 skein)

-Size H crochet hook

Stitch explanations

-Hdc = half double crochet

-Yo = yarn over

-BLO = back loop only (the loop farthest from you)

-Magic ring = If you don’t know how to do a magic ring, this website has a great explanation with pictures: http://www.craftsy.com/blog/2013/09/demystifying-the-magic-ring/ You don’t have to use a magic ring, but I think it looks nicer. If not using a magic ring, you could possibly chain 4, join with slip stitch, 2 hdc in each chain for a total of 8 hdcs.

-Puff stitch = yarn over, insert hook into stitch and draw up a loop. Yo, insert hook into same stitch and draw up a loop 4 more times (for a total of 5 times, you will have 11 loops on your hook) then yo and draw through all loops on hook. Yo and draw through loop one more time to close. One puff stitch made. Hint: draw up your loops loosely to make it easier to draw through all of them in one go.

**Important notes:

-There are no chains to start at any of the rounds. The first stitch in each round is crocheted into the first stitch of the previous round. All rounds are joined with a slip stitch.

-This doily will not lay perfectly flat at first. I did stretch it a little bit and also poked the puffs through to the front more with my finger so they looked more “puffy” and mine lays fairly flat without having to do any actual “blocking”. This may differ depending on how loose or tight you crochet.

-This doily is 8” across.

-Some rows are crocheted in the back loop only. I felt this made it lay a little better.

-This pattern was not tested by anyone other than myself, so feel free to ask questions to clarify.

Lets get started!

Pattern

Round 1: Make a magic ring and crochet 8 hdc into ring. Join circle with a slip stitch. (8 hdc completed)

Round 2: In BLO: 2 hdc in each hdc around, join. (16 hdc)

Round 3: In BLO: *1 hdc into first hdc, 2 hdc into next hdc. Repeat from * around, join. (24 hdc)

Round 4: *1 hdc into first hdc, puff stitch into next hdc. Repeat from * around, join. (12 hdc +12 puff stitches = 24 stitches.)

Round 5 (the tricky round! See picture below) : hdc in first hdc, 2 hdc in stitch between hdc and puff stitch, hdc in puff stitch, 2 hdc in hdc. Continue crocheting 1 hdc then 2 hdc in every other stitch but this includes each hdc, in-between stitch, and puff stitch from the previous round. Join. (54 hdc)

Round 6: In BLO” *Single hdc in first and 2nd hdc’s, 2 hdc in 3rd hdc. Repeat from * around, join. (72 hdc)

Round 7: In BLO: *Single hdc in first 3 hdc’s. 2 hdcs in 4th hdc. Repeat from * around, join. (90 hdc)

Round 8: *Puff stitch in first hdc, skip 1 hdc, hdc in next hdc, skip 1 hdc. Repeat from * around ending on a puff stitch and join. (The numbers don’t match up as well as previous rows but this was the best way to get it to lay more flat.) (23 puff stitches + 22 hdc = 55 stitches)

Round 9: Hdc in each stitch around including the in-between stitches as explained in round 5.

Finish off and weave in ends.
